Please be kind
Eke out my story
In your behinds...”

Hello dear tMx readers,

Once more the eminent überchap, Signor Jean Encoule, has invited this old Shapething to submit willingly some material for the ever-stimulating tMx. This time around I decided to throw some poetry in the mix. I wrote poems at the same time as lyrics for The Shapes, but once the band split up, I carried on with the poems. Some of these have subsequently been set to music, such as “Minutes Become Spaghetti”. For this issue, I have published a selection from my first “volume” Capra Hircus (1980-1987). These span the period when The Shapes imploded, through my time at Goldsmiths College, and the period after graduation when I was being a sculptor and general flâneur-about-town.

Themes are generally around love, life, loss, lust and goats. They were originally written in the jumbled-up typography that is featured here, a device intended to further a sense of disorientation, and a lack of clarity regarding convention and human understanding. I have added an image to each poem that kind-of-supports the theme.

The afformentioned Mr. Encoule has kindly invited me to spread this submission over the next few issues of the tMx ‘Poetry Corner’, so in the following months you will be able to read selections from Stomack, Maelstrom, CorkySphere and Phosphoressence, which will bring me roughly up to the here and now.

I thank you for your indulgence,

Ben Browton – NeverEverEverLand
